The City of Santo André and Semasa (Santo André Municipal Environmental Sanitation Service) launched the Moeda Verde project in November 2017.

The action aims to raise awareness among city residents, especially those living in poor communities, about the importance of separating wet and dry waste and conscious consumption.

The idea is to encourage families to exchange recyclable waste for food. For every 5kg of recyclables delivered, the resident receives 1kg of produce – fruits, vegetables and greens.

The pilot project was implemented at the Gypsy Center, in Utinga .

On average, every 21 days, a mobile agency visits the Centers to exchange waste for fresh food, which is purchased from urban rural producers in the city and also through the Food Bank.

How it Works

Transverse Process

Moeda Verde is based on the concept of waste, but also encompasses food safety and healthy eating. By encouraging the recycling process and proper waste separation, Semasa also aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Santo André Landfill, extending its useful life.
